Historical information The lived in areas of Alleghe, before the creation of the lake, was composed by a group of villages which lie at the bottom of a valley in which the stream Cordevole ran. On January 11th 1771, a huge slide fell from Mount Spiz covering all the surrounding bottom areas. The great dam made by all the debris stopped the stream water raising the water level covering everything below and then continued its course. The rising water rise created what is now the lake. Since the past century along the boarders of the lake, the first hotels were built., in connection with a glorious sport: mountain climbing. These mountains were the attraction of the first excursionists in this period who were looking for the conquests of untouched mountain peaks of:Civetta, Pelmo, Marmolada. The number of hotels increased significantly reaching today all the surrounding areas of: Rocca Pietore,Caprile, Masarè, Selva di Cadore,Colle Santa Lucia. Particular attention should be paid to the town of Caprile, which some of its houses dated back to the 1600's clearly shows the Venetian influence which in this little town used to have the metal melting oven. In just a few years, the availability to host in Alleghe has increased significantly thereby satisfying its' clientele. There are also many recreational facilities available, also observing the need of those wishing a touch of tranquility. It is also a beautiful and perfect place for those still searching an ancient flavor still present in the valley found in the typical products, art, country style architecture, hand-crafted goods in the local tradition. These are many of the factors that gives to a mountain holiday that special touch.. Since 1979, Alleghe, using the potential which the mountain offers in the area of winter sports, has boomed with many tourists. Nowadays, it is one of the most renown towns visited by lovers of Ski-Civetta with over 80 km. of ski runs from every level and served by 28 ski lifts. For Nordic skiing there are over 50 km of ski run areas always with snow. In this context the lake also has a primary role: Once upon a time people used to skate on the thick layer of ice, it is here that many national champions of hockey belong to the Alleghe were born. Now, to in order to guarantee the continuity in practice training and the chance of summer ice skating, a new stadium has been built which is accessible throughout the year.
