Historical information The exact date in which the first people moved in this area is very hard to find. The native population ( according to the scholars) came here from Isarco and Adige valleys which are nearby, as well as the people who moved into the Badia, Gardena, Fassa and Livinallongo areas. The last findings suggest that the territory of Rocca Pietore was a Lombard outpost (arimannia) a few centuries before the year one thousand. These outposts were military camps which protected the territory. They were all bases which reported to the fortress which was the Rocca of Pietore. The area controlled by the fortress was much larger then the actual territory of this county and it included the upper Val di Fassa and Livinallongo. From the year one thousand up to about 1400, Rocca Pietore belonged to the Tyrol County and to the Bressanone Diocese. After some political litigation, in 1395,this area passed under the control of the city of Belluno. The people of Rocca kept their traditions and folklore together with strong autonomy so that in 1417 the Statute of the Magnificent Community of Rocca was written and this county became an independent Ladin Republic. This lasted up until 1806 with the arrival of Napoleon Bonaparte who closed the most glorious part of Rocca 's history. From then and on, the history of Rocca is connected to Italian history, with the important parenthesis of the Austrian dominion in all the Veneto region that lasted about 50 years until 1866. Rocca Pietore now is back to its old "owners". As a testimony to its 400 years of life as the Magnificent Community of Rocca, there are the remains of the Justice building "El Banco de la Rason" in the village of Saviner di Laste. The current population is about 1,466 people. They try to keep alive the typical characteristics of the Ladin population, among which there is the particular dialect Ladin-atesino spoken in the villages of Laste and Sottoguda. The tourist development started in the'60 with the creation of the ski-lifts for the Marmolada mountain. Then many more sky-lifts were built and this area was connected to Arabba area, and therefore also, with the very famous round of the Sella Ronda and the skiing grounds of the Dolomite Superski.

Useful information Housing: 24 hotels with 1.180 beds - 212 other accommodations for a total of 2.575 beds. Of course there aren't only hotels, apartments, refuges, camping areas and vacation homes, but there are also many souvenir shops, clothing stores, wood, iron and pewter handcraft shops. The products made of iron are typical of this valley. It is an art handed down from generation to generation. The traditions of these people are still strong in the area thanks to two groups: Union di Ladins de Ròcia and the group Folk Marmolèda. There are many colorful exhibitions both during the summer and the winter. Another tradition to remember is the masks by Matazin and Matacink (these are the carnival masks of the villages of Sottoguda and Laste). Matazin has a conic shaped hat covered with colorful flowers and from the tip many strips fall down. His clothes are made by overlapping pieces of cloth with fringes, and when he walks around he makes a happy sound with the bells. Matacink has a shaped hat covered with precious family stones and the great grouse feathers or forcello. He goes from one house to the other to look for girls to invite them to dance and he leaves their fathers a pledge.
