Historical information
The name Vigo clearly has a Roman origin (From vicus = village), as it is proven by a few archeological finds. The statute of the independent government of this community dates back to 1338. Vigo was until 1797 the administrative center of the Centuria d'Oltrepiave. Its history is characterized by the fight for its ownership by Campo Razzo and Cadin di Razzo. One should visit the Historical Library, the largest one in Cadore, founded in 1892 by the scholar Ronzon. It has ancient archive and many precious documents such as more than 500 old parchments. Also very nice is Sant'Orsola church, a national monument, built in 1344-45 by Ainardo da Vigo and holds inside a circle of frescos made in the XIV and XV century; S. Margherita church (beginning of '300) which has frescos representing the history of the Saint.
