Farra d'Alpago
|
|
Accessibility Entering into the Alpago through the Treviso territory through Fadalto, the first county that we encounter is Farra. Farra is of longobardian origin and the center of the county is "projected" toward the government forest of Cansiglio. There are some religious buildings of great value in this area: the parish, the little church of S. Vigilio, which is considered to be the oldest in the Alpago area, the church of Ss. Ermagora and Fortunato (S. Croce) and the sanctuary of the virgin of Runal. This last church is a place of the Virgin Mary cult and in celebration of the Virgin Mary's nativity (September 8) this church is visited many devoted pilgrims coming from the surrounding areas and the nearby Friuli Region. Regarding the Virgin of the Runal, also called the Lumber Jack Virgin exists a still-existing legendary tradition, which says that the image of the Virgin Mary was found on a birch tree near an old church. For this reason, a harsh fight between the town of Spert (a little town in the county of Farra near the sanctuary) and Farra began for the ownership of the precious icon. At the end, after many attempts for the ownership by the county of Farra, blood poured out of a cut birch branch. The inhabitants of Farra decided to give up on their sacrilegious demand. After talking about the old Farra, now let's talk about its modern attractions: the S. Croce Lake. It is the second basin for its size in the Veneto area. The old Lapacinus' is, during the good weather seasons, visited by thousands of tourists attracted by the favored climate and the beautiful surrounding mountain frame. It is a real earthly paradise for those who love windsurfing and sailing thanks to its particular wind currents. Our lake, during the late autumn and spring is populated by many fishermen who are interested in the quality and the abundance of fish (carp, trout, perch, chub, jack fish, tench and the indigenous sampieroli).
