A RUSH OF ALPINE WATERS
Description
Water: the greatest gift of the
Alps, without a doubt. In the springtime sun, the winter snow melts into sparkling, lively water which runs down into the valley, into the rivers, waterfalls and lakes - sometimes calm and still, sometimes impetuous and bursting with life, but always fascinating. One of the most thrilling experiences these waters can provide is the opportunity to venture into the gullies and ravines carved out by the mountain streams, where you can often admire splendid waterfalls, such as the one in the
Gola della Galizia gully [1] in Leisach, near the capital of the
East Tyrol. The gully can be visited thanks to a recently-repaired path and a bridge which offers a wonderful view over the Lienz Dolomites. You will find information panels in the area with comprehensive information on the flora and fauna of the gully; there is also a water-powered mill which turns the stones into smooth, round pebbles. You might also like to visit the dashing rapids formed by the
Isel River in the stretch which goes from
Ainet [2] to
Huben [3].
The Isel forms the three valleys of Umbal, Virgen and Isel, gushes out from the ice of the Venedigergruppe and runs into the Drava at Lienz. In the upper part of the river are the famous Umbal waterfalls; the Isel is the second most important river in the East Tyrol after the Drava .
There are also plenty of opportunities to hear the rush of the water and feel it splashing on your face in the province of Belluno. In Sappada [4] you can see the Orrido di Acquatona ravine, where the Piave River takes a 50m + leap and forms superb waterfalls and splendid inlets in the rocks, and the waterfalls in the Mulbach neighbourhood, which are floodlit in summer until 11 p.m. In Cortina d’Ampezzo [5] the Fanes Brook creates the striking Cascate di Fanes falls, which can be reached by going along a fine, fairly simple via ferrata equipped route which enters into the gully, passing right behind the waterfalls, between the rocks and the water. In the Valbelluna, on the right bank of the Piave River, you can see a range of torrents which have shaped the landscape. At Trichiana [6], you will find a path which allows you to visit the Brent de l’Art, a fairly deep ravine characterized by the stunning striped effect formed by layers of red and white marble limestone interspersed with layers of red and grey-greenish clay.
On the right bank of the Piave, you can admire the Cascate della Soffia waterfall and the crystal-clear Cadini del Brenton potholes, both at the head of Mis Lake [7] in the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park: the Soffia is a striking, fast-moving waterfall which emerges from the rocks and dashes down into the calm waters of the lake, while the Cadini are a series of 15 natural pools shaped by the waters of the Brenton Torrent, which leap nimbly downwards in a spectacular display of ever-changing colours. Water is of vital importance: pure, healthy, and sometimes with impressive healing properties which make it even more precious. The province of Belluno boasts two spa areas. The one in
Làgole di Calalzo, located in a superb natural landscape, is used to treat skin disorders. Today visitors to the area can relax in the fresh, clean air close by the spring and the little lakes. The other well-known spring in the Dolomites can be found at the
Valgrande spa area in Padola di Comelico Superiore; here the waters are rich in elements which are particularly helpful in the treatment of skin disorders, vein problems, ear, nose and throat complaints, and are also used in spa cosmetology. The waters are excellent for the skin and the mucous membranes. On the other side of the border, in Abfaltersbach,
the Aigner Badl Spa Area, in operation since the 18th century, has been declared a national monument. The sulphurous waters are helpful for treating joint pains, rheumatism, sciatica and skin healing problems. Visitors can immerge themselves in a covered larch-wood bath and relax in the spa waters, an experience which truly does isolate you from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
