Historical information Cortina d'Ampezzo enters in history around the year one thousand. The name Ampezzo (Ampitium = large space) appeared the first time in a purchase contract dated 1156. In 1420, Ampezzo detached itself from the Patriarchate and became a part of Venice that in this way strengthened the Rocca di Botestagno in the northern area of Ampezzo using it as a doorway to its territory. When the emperor Massimiliano conquered it (summer of 1511) Ampezzo no longer belonged to the Serenissima and became an Austrian territory. The emperor himself promised the inhabitants that they would have their autonomy. This lasted until 1800 with the creation of the modern Austrian state which wanted to impose many new laws including the usage of the German language. During the Napoleon wars Ampezzo was destroyed (1809) with the creation of the Viceregno Lombardo Veneto. In 1866 the border went back to Acquabona. After the invasion of the Italian soldiers in 1915, and at the end of the first World War 1919, Ampezzo officially became the county of Cortina d'Ampezzo, taking its name from its main town. Dates to be remembered:1484 The first tourist in Ampezzo was a priest named Felix Faber. 1785 The construction of the first hotel named Aquila. 1830 The state road Alemagna was inaugurated. 1850 - 1858 The Bell Tower was constructed 76 mt high, 200.000 florin were spent. 1872 The first foreign tourist Amelia Edwards (English). 1903 The club Tyrol was formed for skiing, mountain climbing, bobsledding and etc. 1925 the cableway Pocol was inaugurated. 1956 Winter Olympics
