Stage 7: from Sospirolo to Val Imperina

From the town of Sospirolo you will reach the small village of Piz, once famous for its numerous factories that used water power to move their water wheels, cross the bridge over the Mis stream and you will arrive to Torbe. From here you will get to Vedana, well-known village for its lake and charter-house built in the fifteenth century on the site of the ancient hospice of St. Mark. The Charter-house is a real gem of architecture, art and faith nestled at the entrance of the narrow Cordevole valley at the foot of the Monti del Sole mountains.

The “Certosa di Vedana” is the starting and ending point of the “Way of the Hospices”, a historic thoroughfare for pilgrims and travelers who reached the Agordo, Belluno and Feltre areas through the valley of the Cordevole stream. The thematic route that passes through the hospices of San Marco di Vedana, San Gottardo, San Giacomo di Candaten and Santa Maria Maddalena di Agre, built between the eleventh and the twelfth century by the count-bishops of Belluno, in order to promote links with Agordo, which since 923 had become the territory of the diocese.

Heading towards the village of San Gottardo, take the path along the Cordevole stream and continue, between the towns of Candaten and Salet into the Monti del Sole Natural Reserve managed by the State Forestry Corps Department. Inside the reserve you can admire horses graze and many local wildlife, like deers and chamois, as well as its wonderful flora.

The itinerary continues between the bed of the Cordevole stream and the woods, gradually going uphill before descending towards the ancient hospice of Agree with its church dedicated to Mary Madgalene, today restored and managed by the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park.

Crossing the footbridge over the Cordevole stream, you will reach the right bank and take the old paved road that crosses the Castèi narrow gorge, a term that recalls the presence of ancient fortifications built to protect the valley, historically exploited for timber, with which coal was also produced. You will then arrive to the ending point of this stage, the mining site of Val Imperina, abandoned by the mid-twentieth century but now an interesting visitor center inside the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park in the municipality of Rivamonte Agordino.
