Feltre Chestnut

Feltre Chestnut (or Marrone) is well known for its sweetness and floury texture, which is compact and holds up to cooking. This variety is produced in the municipalities of Feltre, Pedavena, Cesiomaggiore, Sospirolo, San Gregorio nelle Alpi, Seren del Grappa, Fonzaso, Quero Vas and Alano di Piave.

This chestnut can boast features which distinguish it from other varieties:in particular, it is egg-shaped, with harness at the top, evident and sometimes knelling torch, a flat lateral side while the other one convex, well-outlined rectangular hilum cicatrix. The outer husk, called pericarp, is rather thin, brown, with darker meridian streaks, while the fruit is covered with a light brown pellicle which is easy to take off. The pulp is white, compact and sweet.

Feltre chestnut is used to prepare roasted chestnuts, baked in oven, or to prepare the classical chestnut soup.

The Consortium of Protection of Feltre Chestnut was established in 1996 to enhance this product though the recovery of the chestnut trees and the updating of local farmers; this product is also included in the “Carta Qualità” of the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park (a circuit including and recommending to tourists and residents the facilities and products more deeply linked to the “Park system”).
