Alpago

The municipality Alpago extends from the Cansiglio to the Lake of Santa Croce in the southeastern part of the province of Belluno.
The whole area is like a fan that opens from Sella Fadalto, just beyond Vittorio Veneto, entering the province of Belluno from the south east and surrounded by the mountains of Dolada, Col Nudo, Teverone and Cavallo Mount. Its heart is the Lake of Santa Croce, which mitigates the climate, it extends Farra of Lombard origin that houses some of the oldest religious buildings of the entire Alpago Basin, such as the San Vigilio church, the parish church of Saints Philip and James, the church of Santa Croce del Lago or destination of suggestive pilgrimages through the forest as the sanctuary of the Madonna del Runal celebrated every year, on the occasion of the Nativity of the Virgin (8 September).

Sports and beach resort of great interest is the Lake of Santa Croce, the second area in Veneto, an essential destination for lovers of sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, and fishing. On the shores of Lake also lies a wide and equipped beach where you can play beach volleyball and beach-soccher or walk the many paths and cycle and pedestrian routes suitable for everyone.
At the centre of  Alpago basin on the right bank of the river Tesa, between the slopes of the surrounding mountains and Lake of Santa Croce, it is the centre of Puos which offers a varied landscape dotted with typical villages as Sitran with its arcades and Valzella with the panoramic church of San Pietro.

Pieve d'Alpago is located at the foot of Mount Dolada (1938 m) and has been since ancient times an important centre both from the religious point of view, with the Rosary Mother Church of Santa Maria, as from the civil point of view too. Several artefacts of Paleoveneti that were found during archaeological excavations in Quers, Plois and Pian dell'Agnela, testify to a past of people who chose this area as their home thanks to the dominant strategic position. There are numerous villages and hamlets features including Curago, Plois, Quers, Torres, Tignes, Garna, Rorei, Schiucaz, and Villa Swamps, with particular stone houses with roof terraces typical of the alpagota  area and examples of noble architecture as Falin Villa in Pieve, unique Venetian villa in Alpago built in the seventeenth century and altered in later centuries.

Today the town of Alpago, thanks to our preferential relations with the neighbouring mountains, is an important destination for those who want to enjoy an active holiday in the round from winter sports to hiking and especially the paragliding and hang-gliding, which attract lovers of these disciplines to the refuge Dolada / Dolomieu, elected, with its splendid view of lake and on the Dolomites, ideal starting point for high-altitude flights.
