Dolomites, the world capital of eyewear

The Dolomites, a World Heritage Site, host the most important district of Italian eyewear, with world leading companies: Luxottica, Sàfilo, De Rigo, Marcolin and many other companies that, according to Carlo Maria Cipolla, authoritative economic historian, create "in the shadow of the bell towers, beautiful things appreciated all over the world." The eyewear made amongst the most beautiful mountains in the world are an example of "beautiful and well done" products, i.e. those medium/high-end consumer goods that stand out for the design, care, quality of materials and workmanship, as well as attention to environmental sustainability.

In the heart of the district, in Pieve di Cadore, a few steps from the birthplace of Tiziano Vecellio, there is the Eyewear Museum. The international denomination "Eyeglasses. History and fashion" best describes the extraordinary quality of the pieces that make up the current exhibition, among the most important and complete in the world. The rich and precious heritage of objects and documents is presented to the public through two thematic itineraries: on the first floor are the fascinating exhibits, most of them in precious stones and materials, which narrate the evolution and the history of eyeglasses, explained in the context of sight, eye defects and diseases: the evolution of eyewear from medical instruments to fashion items, up to the successful collaboration with fashion brands (Dior, Gucci, YSL, Ray Ban, Armani, Carrera, etc.). On the second floor, a rich and complete display of documents, photographs, interviews, old films and machinery, documents the history of the industry in the Italian eyewear district from the end of the 19th century. From seasonal emigration to street vendors, to pioneering factories, large industries, market globalisation. From the long crisis of the end of the last century to the current recovery, recreating work environments with historical rigour and old instruments.
